Skip the Dealer. We'll Come to You.

Most people's first instinct when they lose a car key is to call the dealer. The problem is that dealer key replacement typically means scheduling an appointment — sometimes days out — plus towing the vehicle if it won't start, paying dealer-level labor rates, and waiting at the service department for hours. That's a lot of hassle for something that should take 30 to 45 minutes.

For the majority of vehicles on the road today, a qualified automotive locksmith can replace a lost or broken key, cut a new one to the correct profile, and program the transponder chip — all at your location. No tow truck needed, no appointment waiting, and competitive pricing compared to dealer rates.

We service vehicles throughout Jacksonville — whether the car is sitting in your driveway in Mandarin, in a parking deck downtown, in a strip mall lot on the Southside, or parked at your workplace in Ponte Vedra Beach. Give us your location, your vehicle details, and we'll get there.

Types of Car Keys We Replace

Car keys have evolved significantly over the past few decades. Here's a breakdown of the types we work with regularly and what's involved in replacing each one.

🔑

Basic Metal Keys (Pre-1995)

Older vehicles used a simple cut metal key with no electronic component — just a blade that physically operates the lock and ignition. These are the easiest and quickest to replace. We can cut these by key code, by VIN lookup, or by impression. If your older vehicle needs a basic key, we typically have you sorted in 15 minutes or less.

📶

Transponder Keys

Most vehicles built from the mid-1990s onward use transponder keys — a standard-looking key blade with a small microchip embedded in the head. When the key is inserted and turned, the chip transmits a signal to the car's immobilizer system. If the chip isn't recognized, the engine won't start. We program replacement transponder keys for most domestic and import vehicles using professional automotive programming tools. This is not something you can get at a hardware store.

📱

Key Fobs & Remote Heads

Many modern keys combine the physical key blade with a remote head that contains buttons for locking, unlocking, trunk release, and panic. These combo units require both cutting to the correct profile and programming the remote functions. We handle both in a single visit. We also program standalone remote fobs that pair with a separate physical key.

🚗

Smart Keys / Proximity Keys

Many newer vehicles use proximity keys — you carry the fob in your pocket and the car unlocks when you approach it, starting with a push-button ignition. These are the most technically involved keys to replace and require specialized programming equipment. We work with most major brands that use this technology. Call us with your year, make, and model and we'll confirm our capability before heading out.

Switchblade / Flip Keys

Some vehicles use a flip key where the blade folds into the fob housing. These combine a transponder chip with a remote — replacing them requires cutting the blade to the right profile and programming both the transponder and remote functions. We see these often on various European makes, as well as many Ford and GM vehicles from the 2010s.

Broken Key Replacement

If your key snapped off — whether in your hand or inside the lock or ignition — the first step is extraction of the broken fragment. Once we've extracted it, we can then cut and program a new replacement. We cover broken key extraction in detail on our automotive locksmith page.

What We Need to Replace Your Key

Car key replacement requires confirming that you're the owner or authorized user of the vehicle. This protects everyone — including you — and is standard practice for any reputable locksmith. When you call, have the following ready:

  • Year, make, model, and trim level of the vehicle
  • Vehicle Identification Number (VIN) — found on the dashboard or door jamb
  • Government-issued photo ID
  • Vehicle title or current registration in your name
  • Location where the vehicle is currently parked

If you're replacing a key for a vehicle that isn't in your name — such as a spouse's car, a company vehicle, or an inherited vehicle — call us and we'll discuss what documentation we'll need in that situation.

Does the Vehicle Need to Be Present?

For most transponder key programming, yes — we need physical access to the vehicle's OBD-II port to complete the programming sequence. This is the diagnostic port typically located under the dashboard on the driver's side. This is why we come to wherever the car is rather than requiring you to bring anything to a shop.

For basic non-transponder key cutting (older vehicles), we can sometimes cut a key from the VIN or a code without the car being present. We'll confirm which situation applies to your vehicle during the phone call.

For spare fob programming only (you already have a working key), some vehicles allow self-programming through a sequence you can perform yourself — we can walk you through this if applicable. If professional programming is required, we handle it on-site.

"Lost both keys to my 2019 Honda CR-V somewhere at the beach. The dealer quoted me $400 and a 4-day wait. These guys came to my house in Neptune Beach, cut and programmed a new key, and I was done in about 45 minutes. Much better experience."

— Car Owner, Neptune Beach

— Driver, Orange Park

"Snapped the key in half in the ignition of my truck in a parking lot off Philips Highway. Honestly wasn't sure what to do. Called these guys, they came out, extracted the broken piece, and cut me a new key. Back in business in under an hour."

Frequently Asked Questions

Cost varies significantly by vehicle type and key complexity. A basic metal key for an older vehicle is much less expensive than a proximity smart key for a newer luxury vehicle. Transponder key replacement for mid-range domestic vehicles typically falls in a range that's meaningfully less than dealer pricing. When you call us with your year, make, and model, we can give you an accurate price quote before we head out — so there are no surprises when the job is done.

In most cases, yes. For most vehicles we can program a brand-new key from scratch even with no working key present. The programming process typically involves connecting to the vehicle's OBD-II port and using our equipment to add a new key to the car's immobilizer system. There are a small number of vehicles — particularly certain European models — where the process is more restrictive, but for the vast majority of vehicles on North Florida roads, losing all keys is not a dead end.

It depends on the fob. Many aftermarket key fobs purchased online are compatible with professional programming equipment — and we can program them if the fob is the right part number for your vehicle. However, some aftermarket fobs are manufactured to a lower specification and may not hold a program reliably. If you've already purchased a fob and want us to program it, have the part number ready when you call and we'll let you know whether it's something we can work with. In some cases we may recommend using a fob we source ourselves if there are compatibility concerns.

For most transponder key replacements, the on-site time once we arrive is typically 20 to 45 minutes. Smart key and proximity key replacement can take a bit longer depending on the vehicle's programming protocol. Basic key cutting for older vehicles takes under 15 minutes. Travel time to your location varies based on where you are in North Florida and where our nearest available technician is at the time you call.

We handle both in the same visit. If you're locked out and also need a key replacement — for example, the only key broke off inside the door lock — we'll extract the broken piece, get the door open, and then cut and program a replacement key. There's no need for two separate service calls. Just describe the full situation when you call so we bring the right equipment for everything we'll need to do.
